What is OpenVZ?

OpenVZ is an Operating System-level server virtualization solution, built on Linux. OpenVZ creates isolated, secure virtual environments — VEs (otherwise known as virtual private servers, or VPSs) on a single physical server enabling better server utilization and ensuring that applications do not conflict. Each VE performs and executes exactly like a stand-alone server; VEs can be rebooted independently and have root access, users, IP addresses, memory, processes, files, applications, system libraries and configuration files. Provided Backup Solution

All VPSs come with remote FTP backup storage equaling the amount of space your VPS is allotted. Your backup space is only to be used for backing up your server and can only be accessed from your server. You are also allowed 1 VPS Snapshot backup via our HyperVM Control Panel. Keep in mind that FTP backups don't count towards your bandwidth limit since we utilize our Private Network at SoftLayer!

We are now offering iSCSI solutions for those who need a ton of space. iSCSI allows access to enterprise-grade Storage Area Network (SAN) storage over Ethernet, and is easily provisioned, highly scalable, and outperforms internal disks. The data is transfered over the internal network with gigabit connectivity between servers and the storage array. Each server rack features 10-gigabit uplinks to the array, utilizing jumbo frames for maximum performance at near-zero latency.

This is to be ordered with a VPS plan as an addon and replaces the plan's original disk space. We do not allow "snapshot" backups on any VPS with over 25 GB. However, we are working on iSCSI backup solutions other than FTP/NAS. We will update this section as we make more progress with this newly available technology.
